Linux: Installation (Demonstration)

This is a simple demonstration of the installation of a reasonably modern Linux distribution (currently OpenSuSE 10.3) on a standard, low end PC. There is an opportunity for extensive questions and answers during the software installation phase. |

The requirements for providing accessible web pages, utilising the site-wide search engine on your web pages and liaising with a web design company are also covered. Only the basics of HTML (hypertext markup language) will be covered, but there are other courses for those wishing to extend their knowledge. By the end of the course participants will have created three personal linked web pages. |

An introduction to the bibliography package EndNote and its interface with Microsoft Word. EndNote is a program that stores bibliographic references, and notes about those references, in an EndNote Library. EndNote then interfaces with MS Word to help you create a bibliography and bibliographic citations while you type a document. The style (contents and layout) of the citations and bibliography can then be formatted in an Output Style of your choice; this can easily be changed without retyping. |

It is a myth that any of this requires system privilege. This course demonstrates the building, installation and use of typical software ranging from trivially easy examples (the "configure, make, install" scheme) through to the evils of badly written Makefiles. Common errors and what they mean will be covered and by the end of the course the student should be able to manage their own software without needing to pester their system administrator. |
